I. Introduction
A.Attention Material

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. Otherwise known as (THC), this substance is found in a plant commonly referred to as marijuana.
B.Orienting Material
Using the US Dept. of Health and Human Services logic, 40% of the people in this room have tried this drug for some reason or another. You definitely wouldn't be the first to exercise the therapeutic advantages of the plant. Marijuana has been used medicinally for thousands of years, reaching many different regions on the planet and supported by a long list of scientists, philosophers, and independent researchers. Its overwhelming research has led to some interesting advancements in modern technology.
(Transition) However the earliest recorded therapeutic usage dates back to almost 6,000 years ago.
II. Body
Main Point: Long & Diverse History
1. Around 2700 B.C. the Chinese emperor Shen Nung, who is popularized as the "Father of Chinese Medicine", recognized the plant as having significant effects in the treatment of malaria, rheumatic pains, and gout.
2. Another interesting period in history deals with an Iranian philosopher named Zoroaster, who is also founder of the ancient religion Zoroastrianism (zawr-oh-as-tree-uh-niz-uh m). In about 550 B.C. he writes a sacred text which lists more than 10,000 medicinal plants. Which one is number one? You guessed it – Marijuana.
3. According to The American Cancer Society, by the time of the mid-1800's marijuana was being used for strychnine poisoning, intestinal pain, epilepsy, cholera, and even asthma.
(Transition) Modern technology has changed things quite a bit in a relatively small amount of time.
B. Main Point: There have been several notable advancements in medicinal marijuana technology in the last 50 years, most notably…
1. Marinol, the first synthetic form of THC was made available in 1985. The Food and Drug Administration has determined that Marinol is safe, effective, and has therapeutic benefits for use as a treatment for nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, and as a treatment of weight loss in patients with AIDS. However, it does not produce the harmful health effects associated with smoking marijuana.
2. Fast forward to today and WebMD reports that medical marijuana has demonstrated promising results in dealing with brain tumors by causing the cancer cells to work against themselves rather than the brain.
(Transition) Potentially curing cancer is like a quantum leap from helping your asthma.

as medical and technological advances continue the uses for medical marijuana and products like Marinol will continue to evolve. The medical research can bee a blessing for those with conditions that would otherwise be incurable. With time and research, the advancements are limitless.
