Thanx! : )
Urich Acid*********** Sorry I spelled it wrong! LOL!
Nice_Huh?
Consuming at least eight glasses of water each day will rid the body of uric acid in the blood stream. In addition to increasing water intake, all alcohol should be eliminated from the diet, especially during an attack of gout. Alcohol, especially wine and beer, keeps the kidneys from being able to filter out uric acid, which can cause an attack. By stopping all alcohol consumption during an attack of gout, uric acid will have an easier time being flushed by the system....Also, a low purine diet.
Try alternating cold and hot packs, and soaking in rubbing alcohol (the green one) for the time being....there is not much that can be done during a gout attack, other then anti-inflammatory drugs(Ibruprofen).

You got it right the first time, it is uric acid, and I can imagine that your mom is in a lot of pain. First, she needs to flush her system out with as much gatorade or water as she can, these form crystals in the joints, usually in the big toes, and hydration will help disperse them. Second, tonight she can take Alleve, Motrin, any antinflammatory like that to help with the pain, too.
Then, she needs to go to the doctor and get on Indocin, a stronger prescription antiinflammatory drug, and also something like Colchincine or another drug to keep the crystals from forming by lowering the uric acid level.
Stay away from protein foods as much as possible, no red meat, etc. Also, no alcohol.
Good luck to her!!

Gout caused by uric acid accumulation (most typically in the 'big toe' joint) is very painful. These uric acid crystals look like little sharp pointed shards of glass under a microscope. That's why they are so painful in a joint.
To treat an acute gout attack, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine like Indocin are given (which is like Motrin and/or Aleve), often along with steroidal / cortisone anti-inflammatories like prednisone or solumedrol. Occasionally an older medicine called 'colchicine' may work well for some.
If your mom is having an acute gout attack, see the doctor. They can also run a uric acid blood level on her to confirm the diagnosis. For a longer term solution (once the acute attack is resolved), patients can usually take 'allopurinol' once a day and keep attacks from happening, if they are a frequent problem. Again, that's the decision of a doctor.
Alcohol ingestion is the most common event that sets off a gout attack, but other foods can, as well, especially foods high in 'purines' or sometimes just high protein (you can look up information of gout prevention diets on the internet).
But don't worry too much because gout is pretty easily treatable both in it's acute form and from a preventative point of view. But you should always see a doctor first.
