Vegetarian diet, pain killers, and plenty of water.

Allipurinol is used to prevent gout attacks. It is a generic and isn't very expensive. Endomethicin is used to relieve symptoms associated with chronic gout attacks. It is usually fast acting. I have also found that tylenol really helps me.
Drinking lots of water is helpful for both prevention and assuaging chronic attacks. Organ meats are usually blamed for gout attacks. Liver, kidney and so forth. My personal theory is that hamburgers and hotdogs, which I eat a lot of, are also to blame (they probably contain organ meats).
So my recommendations are to see a doctor and ask for preventive medicine and medicines that give relief for acute symptoms. Also, reduce the ground meats, possibly even red meats, and drink lots of water. Keeping pressure off the affected joints helps some as well.
I'm sorry about your dad, and I hope he gets to feeling better.

Just going on a vegetarian diet is not a good idea since many vegetables are high in purines. It is you bodies in ability to process purines from food that causes gout. So you do not just want to avoid meat but foods high in purines.
All meats have purines and some have much more than others. Here is a page that shows you which foods are high in purines.

The advice to see a doctor about preventative prescriptions is good advice. Most people with gout seldom if ever have a gout attack when taking the preventative drugs.
