Gout with Kidney Infection?

Gout with Kidney Infection? My mother has diabetes which is under moderate control. She has a sever kidney infection which has caused a gout flare on top of the preexisting neuropathy. As far as medication goes, she's on antibiotics, mild pain killers and the standbys for all the rest. Is there a topical solution to the gout pain since there's nothing more she can take without causing more kidney failure?

My sister recently had gout of her big toe. She said it would hurt her toe so bad at night that she had to go outside and walk around in the snow !! So, maybe put ice packs on the affected area. I believe it is caused by high uric acid so stay away from foods which make this.

Sorry to hear about your mom.

I have read that lemon juice can be used as a topical. I've never tried it, and I don't have much confidence that it'll work, but your mom can give it a try.

Have her drink lots of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight, each day. Allopurinol is what I take, but your doctor would be able to say if it would hurt her other conditions. Foods that help to make the body alkaline rather than acidic are best. Again, for diabetes, I'm not sure what's ok and what isn't, but try these:

Instead of pasta, try potatoes.
Instead of meat or poultry, try tofu.
Instead of peanuts, try raisins.
Instead of pop, try 100% fruit juice (V8 Fusion is my favorite)

Best of luck to her!
