Thanks for the answers so far guys. I am lucky that he doesnt like beer or wine. We rarely eat red meats, sticking mostly to pork and chicken. He does drink an excess of diet cokes and other than what I cook for dinners, his diet does leave some to be desired (he likes his sugar doughnuts and those Fridays bacon and cheddar chips - but those are even far and few between now).

He needs to watch his diet. No fatty foods or red meat. No red wine. You can get more info at www.webmd.com

A couple of things;
dont eat beans or legumes, red meat or anything that has purines in them, cut back on beer consumption.
Get an Rx from your doc for colchicine; it will remove the acute problem over the course of a few days, then begin a regimen of an Rx of allopurinol from your doc to decrease future episodes. In lieu of seeing the doc right now, drink lots of fluids, take anaprox or naprosyn x 3 daily to assist with inflammation removal.
then:
Drink LOTS of water and fluids, natural suppliments of black cherry juice taken daily, and read all the information you can on gout. It will take a lifestyle change in daily habits to decrease future episodes of gout. Even with all these precautions, episodes may still happen.
I have gout, I drink lots of water daily, drink the black cherry juice concentrate, cut back on red meat consumption, eat few beans and cut back on the beer. It would be best if I didn't consume any of these, but hey, I am guy. My system reponds well to these things.
hope this helps
