There has been good response to alleviating gout by eating cherries. Get grandma to eat a handful or so a day--dried, canned, frozen, or fresh.

Suffer myself. They call it a "rich mans disease" red meat, red wine and tomato's. From experience I noticed that worries contribute 80% towards it. I take "Diclofenac- sodium" and "Panafcort" (from the chemist) and that relieves the pain within a day or two. After that I take "Puricos" to break down the uric acid crystals. I know it is bloody painful and can not be cured. Careful with the acidy foodstuffs.
Peace.

It can't be cured, but it can be controlled. My buddy who has gout just told me to tell you to go to http://goutdiet.guidereviewed.com

It is vital that your grandma seeks proper help from a rheumatologist. Her doctor is wrong to say there is no special treatment for it.
She needs two types of treatment. One to lower uric acid and one to treat the pain.
Uric acid lowering, if done properly, will get rid of gout after a few months. It needs to be monitored to make sure it is low enough to get rid of all the uric acid crystals that have built up. Anything less is a waste of time.
There are many different pain relief treatments for gout. A rheumatologist will help your grandma choose one that is right for her.
You can find rheumatologists anywhere in the world on the American College of Rheumatology site (link below)
