How long is a gout attack?

How long is a gout attack? My doctor diagnosed me with gout 12 days ago. From a feeling of walking around with a badly sprained ankle(the attack is in my ankle) in the first week, now I have a feeling of walking around with a badly bruised ankle. I have tried to keep away from all foods possible that can make an attack worse, but the bruised feeling is making me limp in pain. Should I expect it to go away over the next few days or should I just see the doc?

Depends. Did he give you Colchicine or not. It is best if you can use it, as it will clear it up in about a week.

Other than that I have had it stay around for a month or longer.

Oh...well it takes a good month to get rid of it. Did he give you pills? My husband's lasted a good long while. My husband's was in his big toe and went up the side of his foot! He couldn't even put shoes on!
You know my mother used to make me (This sounds dumb) but if you beat up some egg whites really stiff, and put them inside of a towel, wrap it around your ankle, see if that relieves your pain. It works for sprained ankles, maybe it will work for gout too! I should have tried it on my husband! They tell you to stay away from certain foods but it's almost impossible to do so. I had the hardest time trying to think of what to make that he just ate everything. You should suspect it to hang around for awhile longer, but he should have given you two different kinds of pills "Uloric", and something else...

There is no standard time frame on how long a gout attack will last. This is because gout is a complicated health complication that involves multiple factors in the body.

Gout is caused by the formation of urate crystals in synovial fluid of the joints due to high concentration of uric acid in the body fluids. The body fluids I am talking about are the blood, inter-cellular fluid, intra-cellular fluid, lymphatic fluid, and many more. The problem with conventional medical approach towards gout or hyperuricemia is that the doctors only focus on the value of the uric acid level in the blood. Since blood is a dynamic fluid which changes it concentration fast, one cannot judge the body health condition just by looking at the blood test report.

In many cases, a gout victim can have normal healthy blood readings but still suffer from frequent serious gout attacks. This is because his body tend to distribute the uric acid to other fluids in the body instead of the blood, the acid tend to hide withing the inter-cellular and synovial fluid near the joints.

If your gout condition is similar to the one mentioned above, you will still suffer from gout attacks no matter how careful you are with your diet and how obedient you are in taking those gout drugs. The gouty inflammation will still strike your from time to time as long as those urate crystals are still inside your body.

The only effective way to speed up the healing of the existing gouty inflammation and prevent any potential attacks in the future is by removing those urate crystals that has already formed in the joints. Until today, there is still no surgical procedure available to remove the urate crystals instantly, this is because those tiny needle-like crystals are too fine and scattered all over the body which also give you the stiff and sour muscle pains.

The only effective way to get rid of those urate crystals is by melting them away. Since it is formed within the fluid, so you must use fluid to flush them away too. The most effective way is to drink water (preferably ionized alkaline water) frequently and eat more alkalizing vegetables and fruits. Instead of asking how long a gout attack will last, you should ask how fast can you return the uric acid level in your body back to normal.
