You shouldn't drink diet soda--it's really bad for your health (it can cause neurological problems and can cause bone loss because of the the phosphorus). Avoid pasturized and homogenized dairy products too and eat and drink more fresh fruits and vegetables (because processed and cooked foods require your body to produce more acid because they lack the enzymes that fresh foods have to break down the food).
Here some info on gout and some things that you could try out:

(Sorry, if it wasn't that helpful because I don't know much about gout--but it's true about the acid.)
Edit: No problem! Yeah bread is a processed food and whole grain wheat bread (with the bits of hard wheat in it) is a lot better if you have to eat bread. And brown rice is better than white rice (white rice has all the fiber removed). You'll feel a lot better if you eat more fresh and whole grain foods.

My Dr. put me on Celebrex.
One 200mgm cap at bedtime.
I have Osteoarthritis as well and gout is another form of arthritis.
When I would forget to take it with me when I went out for the night and wouldn't be home I sure felt it the next day, then I had to double up.
I always carry some with me from now on.
Perhaps it would help you too.
It seems to draw the uric acid crystals away from the affected joint as well as any inflammation.

Yep, unfortunately pop and chicken and turkey can make the body acidic, which leads to the body having more difficulty getting rid of the uric acid. Drink lots of water: daily do 1 oz of water for every 2 lbs of body weight.
Foods to eat: berries, oranges, apples, ripe bananas, grapes, pineapple, potatoes, onions, corn, carrots and all of the 3-syllable veggies. :o) Also, sour cream, plain yogurt (mixed with fruit such as in a smoothie), cottage cheese. Fruit juices that are 100% juice. Cherry juice.
Foods to stay away from: alcohol, processed carbs, high fructose corn syrup.
Pills to take: allopurinol - not dangerous, give it a try; goutcure.com herbal pills - they're not a cure for gout, but I take them and they seem to be helpful; colchicine - slows cell division, for some reason that helps.
All the delicious foods that we love to eat? You can eat them in moderation, just try to eat the above foods along with the "bad" one, in equal portions.
Two main things: help your body get rid of uric acid, and take something for the pain such as Indocin or colchicine.
Best of luck to you!
