OK... Allopurinol is a good drug for prevention of gout. It keeps the uric acid in your blood at a low level. This is something you should be taking every day as routine maintenance. When the uric acid level gets too high, the uric acid crystallizes in your joints, resulting in the excruciating pain associated with gout.
If you are currently experiencing symptoms of gout (e.g., swelling, redness, heat and PAIN!!) you need to take something that will QUICKLY lower your uric acid, like Colchicine. My doctor advises me to take one pill every hour until the pain is relieved. (The drawback of this approach is that it causes diarrhea, but that is generally better than the pain!!)
As a pain reliever, you can choose pretty much anything you can tolerate. I take some high-power doses of Indocin (generic: Indomethacin), but not everyone can stand it. Consult with your physician to find the pain reliever that is right for you. Vicodin can be helpful, but some people have good luck with Advil, Alleve and Tylenol too!!
No matter what drugs you take for gout, it is MOST important to realize that it's the foods and beverages you consume which most dramatically affect your uric acid levels.
Foods to avoid (or eat in moderation) include cheese (especially soft cheese like Brie), nuts, cured meats (bacon, ham, salami), organ meats (liver, brain, kidney), and shellfish (shrimp, lobster, scallops). Alcohol can also trigger an attack, as well as exacerbate existing symptoms (especially beer and wine).
Cherries and cherry juice are natural foods that can help lower uric acid. Holistic treatments like cayenne pepper and bella donna are also available at health food stores, but I have not found these to be terribly helpful.
I wish you the very best with this! Gout is just about the most unpleasant thing you can have!!
I hope this helps!!
