Well it's a long story and some would say it's a conspiracy! Basically colchicine had never actually been approved by the FDA. It was around before the FDA came into being and was "grandfathered" in.
But the FDA decided to do a clean-up of unapproved medicines. One company was involved in the testing of colchicine for the FDA at this time and after the process was up, the FDA gave exclusive rights to this company to manufacture the drug.
So a monopoly was formed and hey presto - the price goes through the roof. A once affordable drug for gout was beyond the reach of many people.
