What is the diffrent between Tienns elbow and Gout?Is Tenns elbow and Gout almost the same?

Dr. Tina
No. Lateral Epicondylitis also known as tennis elbow is completely different from Gout. The lateral epicondyle is on bony protuberance on the lateral aspect of the humerus at the elbow. If you turn you arm so that your hand is facing upward and slightly bend your elbow you can feel a little bump on the outside of your elbow. That is the lateral epicondyle. The muscle group that extends your wrist backward (extensors) as well as the muscle group that allows you to turn your hand upward (supinator) attach to the lateral epicondyle. Muscles attach to bone by way of tendons. It was thought that there was inflammation of these two tendons at the junction of the lateral elbow. Studies have show that the pain is not due to inflammation. It is due to degenerative changes of the tendons of the extensor and supinator muscles. The degeneration can be caused by repetitive motion, over use, over extension of the wrist or over supination. It is equally common in men and women. It usually occurs between the ages 30 and 60.
Gout is a condition in which uric acid salts build up in the urine and then get into the blood stream. These crystal have a tendency to deposit themselves in the fluid of the joints. 50% of the time gout affects the big toe. These crystal can also be deposited in the knees, wrist and ankles. It is unusual for them to deposit in the elbow but not unheard of. Gout is very painful. Even the skin over the affected joint hurts. It is more prevalent in men than in women especially under the age of 60. Women over age 60 seem to get gout at the same rate as men. African Americans have a higher incidence of gout.
Since Gout is not usually seen in the elbow, the person can go misdiagnosed for years with tennis elbow. Diagnosis is made by visualizing the uric acid crystal in the joint fluid.
Both Lateral Epicondylitis are treated with steroids and NSAIDS. Other treatment necessary to address these conditions are different. It is important to determine if you have lateral epicondylitis or gout in your elbow in order to be treated effectively.
