Tendonitis???
Gout can be a chronic condition too especialy if dietary changes arn't made to decrease uric acid... but since you have researched it, than hopefully not. I just know someone with Gout and it's in many joints.. I'm always rather shocked by it b/c I never knew it could get that severe...
but anyways, since it is not swollen or red, I would best guess that it is related to tendonitis...
I would ask that the doctor do a MRI on it.... or see if you can consult with a physicatrist... and no, thats not a psychiatrist.. just stating that b/c people often get confused :)... anyways physiatrist, if you have one near you specialist in musckuloskelatal problems so even though it's the toe only, maybe they can help or there is always a podiatrist ....
good fortune

If your uric acid is 10.9, and your toe hurts, it's gout.

Try taking organic apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons mixed in a cup of cranberry or any liquid. If it really is gout then this will help stop the pain and prevent gout flareups. My father suffered for about 2 years from gout and my in my internet research I found many people use organic ACV and it really helps. Get the "Braggs" brand buy it at any health food store like "Henry's" for under about $ 3. BTW my father started drinking ACV 2 years ago and still hasn't had any flareups :) Check this site earthclinic.com.
