That is the most common site for a gout flare, although it can happen almost anywhere.

Most people experience their first gout attack in the toe. I know I certainly did!

The reason is that the uric acid crystals that cause gout crystallise out of the blood more easily when it is colder. Your extremities are colder than the rest of your body, so are more likely to get gout.

Hence the big toe being the most common area for gout.
