.Now I'm thinking maybe it's gout. I have had gout for a few years, take medication daily for it, but I'm wondering if what i have in my ankle is actually a long-lasting slight bout of gout and not a stress fracture.
Dr Hansen
I think it's more likely to be a stress fracture than gout, because you treating gout. However, there is a possibility that your dosage would have to be changed if it is indeed gout.
I would try to see the doctor that set you on the course of drugs to treat your gout, but in my honest opinion, I think that with a history of jogging and excercise, a stress fracture is far more likely (especially to joggers).

My husband has had gout for the last 10 years, but it only happens in his right big toe. Since you've had gout before does the pain feel the same as the other area you've had gout in? If not, I would probably think it's a stress fracture. If you want to be sure I would suggest that you have an x-ray done at the minor injury clinic.

Likely but improbable. Only your treating physician will be able to tell after doing some x-rays or an MRI. Usually gout only affects smaller joints, almost always the big toe. But that doesn't mean it can't affect larger joints too. Try to cut down on the foods that could initially cause gout, such as tomatoes, red meats, red wines, and anything that is acidic or produces uric acid. If you are already being treated for gout, then this info shouldn't be new.

I would think stress fracture because you already have meds for gout. my dad has gout and has had it for years and years but only got meds a year or two ago... He is dumb but 56. he still drinks, which makes it worse.. he stopped beer and went to vodka... and it hurts from his knees down. Crazy.. But i think its a stress fracture. go to the doctor.
Orignal From: is it likely that what I think is a stress fracture in my lower ankle is actually gout?
