My mother eats/drinks things with lemon juice and avoids red meat. Apparently, these foods help or hurt (respectively) the levels of uric acid crystals in the bloodstream. Drinking lots of water is also good; it helps flush out the uric acid that forms the crystals through urine. For the pain, I recommend willow-bark tea; it's the source from which aspirin (Acetylsalicylic acid) comes, if you're uncomfortable with taking over-the-counter anti-inflammitories like aspirin, acetaminophen, naproxen, and/or ibuprofen.
