Colchicine has long been used to relieve the pain associated with an acute attack of gout.

Medicines that reduce the uric acid in the blood are called uricosuric agents. Aspirin has some uricosuric effect, but the classic medication used to lower the uric acid levels in ones blood is probenecid (Benemid).

Persons with gout are encouraged to drink plenty of water to prevent kidney stones.

Newer treatment regimens may be available, but the old standards are still widely used. Consult your physician.

Colchicine is what is usually prescribed to treat a gout flare-up, but the best defense is to try to prevent the acid crystals from collecting in the joints by staying well hydrated and avoiding overeating and alcohol consumption. Losing weight often does the trick, too.

To get rid of uric acid crystals in Gout, drugs which prevent the generation of uric acid and thereby reduce the tissue stores of uric acid should be used. These drugs are called Xanthine oxidase inhibitors: One of them is Allopurinol.
The following must be done to get rid of uric acid crystals

1.- Allopurinol (Xyloprim)
- reduces production of uric acid, thereby allowing body to dispose of excess uric acid stores
- most effective therapy to lower serum uric acid
- should be used a few weeks after the attack has resolved
- the intial dose is 100 mg per day orally. Titrate monthly acording to serum uric acid level; The serum uric acid levels should be lowered to approximately 5-6 mg/dl. The maintenance dose is 300-400 mg per day orally.
- may be needed life long

2.- Colchicine
- used to prevent attacks of gout which are precipitated by the use of Allopurinol.
- should therefore be used along with Allopurinol
- dose is 0.6 mg orally 2 times daily
- once the target level is achieved and maintained for 6 months,discontinue colchicine prophylaxis.

OR

Indomethacin
- If colchicine cannot be used indomethacin can be used at 25 mg orally twice daily
