Phenylketoneurics should be avoided in people with the genetic disease called Phenylketonuria.
If they ingest it, they will have increased levels of an amino acid called phenylalanine. Because they can't metabolise this normally beneficial aminoacid, it accumulates in their blood causing early severe mental retardation. They show this aminoacid in high levels in the urine, so it can be used to test babies for the disease.
But if they stay away from phenylalanine containing diets, such as your Husband's sugar supplement, they will live normal lives.
Gout affects a completely different metabolic pathway, so there is no problem in using the supplement (unless your husband would mistake it for medication!)
