Can Glucosamine Chondroitin cause a gout attack?
Glucosamine and/or Chondroitin should have no effect on gout - neither positive or negative.Yep, I agree with Craig, I searched on the internet and found into that says Glucosamine Chondroitin (GC) shouldn't affect gout one way or the other. GC is made from the outer shells apparently, not the shell meat.
I have personal experience taking the Gout Care pills. While I think they may have helped somewhat, I still got gout attacks occasionally, even with as you say a good but not perfect diet, drinking lots of water, staying away from beer.
But my plan of attack for the past several months has been this:
1. Take allopurinol, it's a prescription from the doctor. It helps remove uric acid from the body. I have no side effects at all and it's very inexpensive.
2. Drink 12 oz water with 1/2 tsp of baking soda once or twice a day. Helps the body be more alkaline, opposite of acidic.
3. Avoid high fructose corn syrup. This stuff just makes the body think it hasn't taken in food, so you become more hungry, and the more a gout person eats, the tougher it is to avoid the bad gout foods.
4. Celery seed pills. They may help the liver to not produce so much uric acid.
5. I've just about given up beer altogether. Was difficult to do but I felt enough pain finally to change.
6. Red wine is a nice alternative. Again I don't drink a lot of it.
7. Eat lots of sour dairy, ie. cottage cheese, sour cream, play yogurt in a smoothie with orange juice and pineapple and frozen berries.
8. When you say "I drank enough water each day", "enough" for us gout folks is 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight. I'm a small guy, I weigh 150 lbs, and for me that's more than 9 8-oz glasses every day. That's alot.
9. Drink fruit juices that are only 100% juice. V8 Fusion is my favorite, they have many different flavors, and there's veggie juice in it too and it tastes good.
Good luck to you!
