What could cause swelling joints?

What could cause swelling joints? So I have a joint in my foot and my thumb that are swelling and very painful, when an x-ray was done on my thumb, nothing was found. When they did blood work, nothing was found. This was before the joint in my foot started to swell. It feels like there is a marble in my joint and walking is very difficult. What could cause this? The doctors seem a bit confused.

On the blood work and x-ray they look for all form's of arthritis, gout, osteoporosis, carpal tunnel, and breaks.

Possibly fibromyalgia or lupus.

Well, it is often very difficult to diagnose arthritis, so it is not uncommon for blood tests and x-rays to remain inconclusive.

So, even though the doctors have not found signs of arthritis, it still is a reasonable concern. Probably, you will need to get a second opinion and a big part of it is going to be based on your symptoms, so it may help to keep a log/journal describing your symptoms.
