Also, he has had no recent injuries to his foot. He did not step on it wrong or anything like that. Evertime it hurts, he wakes up like that.

He might have arthritis in his foot. Maybe he tore a tendon you don't have to do much to do that !

Plantar fascittis or heel spurs. Plantar fascittis is when the tendon on the bottom of your foot gets stretched out and causes pain when you walk on it. In the morning, the pain is usually the worse since he's been off of his feet and the tendons have shrunk back into place. As you walk on it more, it stretches back out and gets warm so the pain lessens some.

Unbearable pain means get him to a doctor right away! He should have been referred to a podiatrist, since he has probably had all of the necessary bloodwork to rule out conditions like diabetes. Is his foot swelling? If so, it might be a circulation problem and that is DEFINITELY cause for concern. If not, it might be the bones in his foot. They do change as we age, gain or lose weight, increase or decrease physical activity, and a host of other things. I have pain in my feet that is from a hereditary condition, but not disabling. My husband has foot pain because he has "flat feet" and needs special shoes.
Get him to a podiatrist to get properly diagnosed.
