Billnpat's travel blog entry: "July 18. Uppsala Well, the gods of serendipity continue to favour us, if not the health gods. The day before leaving Helsinki I got a sore left big toe after some long walking. It got so bad that on the ferry trip I went to the clinic to borrow a pair of crutches, but they weren't open. That is the reason we skipped Stockholm and, on a whim, came up here to Uppsala, thinking it would be more of a biking town instead of a walking town. Good move! Not only is it a great biking town, it is a beautiful town, surrounded by some truly remarkable history. The toe, by the way is slowing improving... I looked up "gout" on internet, and sure enough, that's it. I guess the sweaty weather and somewhat changed diet (not age of course) brought it on... but it is really a pain in the ... and quite debilitating, but OK on the bicycle. Anyway, we are so glad it brought us here. I had vaguely been aware of Uppsala as an important university town, which it is, but it is also very beautiful, with its river and cobbled streets. The late afternoon of our first day was particularly beautiful as the afternoon sun really highlights the old buildings, the sparkling river, the quaint bridges and the relaxing townsfolk. Yesterday we set off toward Gamla Uppsala (Old Uppsala) by bike. I ...
