"Homo-" in this case means "same," not "man," as in "homonym," "homogenous," etc (You can tell because the opposite is "heterosexual" and hetero- means different).

It means "attracted to the same sex," not "attracted to men."

And were that not the case, well, "gynsexual" just doesn't roll off the tongue.

The "homo" in "homosexual" is from the Greek, where it means "same," not "man." It's just coincidence that "homo" means "same" in Greek and "man" in Latin. Lesbianism is also a word with a Greek origin. It's a reference to the Greek Isle of Lesbos, where the woman poet Sappho is from. She wrote many poems about love of women. So people from Lesbos are "Lesbians," and Lesbians are women who, like Sappho, loved women.
