Is RICE effective for gout?

Is RICE effective for gout?I have swelling and pain in a foot I broke several years ago. The symptoms kind of seem like gout, though aside from obesity I don't think I have any of the risk factors. If it is gout, will rest, ice, compression and elevation make a difference?

You should get your foot looked at by a physician. I would suggest RICE, definitely. If you are under 40, there is a slim chance that what you have is gout. Gout would have nothing to do with your previous break. It is a form of arthritis that is caused by the buildup of uric acid in your joint.
Also, the pain that comes with gout is EXCRUCIATING. My best guess is that you have re-injured your foot somehow. Make an appointment with a physician, and in the meantime, by all means: RICE!

Sure, RICE "may" make a difference. But as another answer stated, pain from gout is big time nasty. We're talking about pain where you can't put a sock or shoe on, it hurts to lift the leg, walking on it is out of the question, even putting pants or undies on is a killer.

Bottom line, get a doctor to look at it. You can look at risk factors all you want. If you've got gout, you've got gout. I'm 5'7" 150 lbs, and I"ve had it for 11 years. Things like not drinking enough water, not eating enough fruits and veggies, eating way too much red meat, drinking too much beer, too much high fructose corn syrup... those are what got me.

A doctor can help you decide on if it could be gout. If it is gout, when you feel enough pain from it, you'll change your diet, and you'll explore your options for prescriptions and natural supplements.

Good luck to you!
