ICE IT. this will decrease the swelling as well as numb some of the pain.
alwaysmekatie
Don't take any meds, that just relieves the symptom not actually get rids of it.
Ice it for 15 minutes on and off, twice a day.
Icy hot patches.
Keep elevated whenever sitting/laying.
Don't put too much pressure.
Tape ankle, for more support.
Tape knee, start at top-leave middle open-tape around bottom.
Try not to stand/walk/run too much.
You should be good to go in about 2-3 days.
Hope that helps(:

i have the same problem with my elbow, and i still work with it.. its really bad but it only lasts a few weeks a time, bet thing to do is ask for either serious strong painkillers from the doc or sleeping tablets... they'll do the same. sleep is the best remedy but unlike me i can work horse through it... but you cant in your leg.
right i dont know why the doctor said dont have ibuprofen i got high blood pressure too and i use them and when my gout is really bad i get ibuprofen based tablets thats strong from the doctors as i have had bad runnings to normal gout reducing tablets (as in runnings to the Loo in less than 10 seconds)
only reason could be you might have tablets that do the same job or has same adverse reaction to the ibuprofen..
so really thats all i can suggest strong pain killers to make you sleep or sleeping tablets if you can already sleep.
get better soon, all the best Ian
EDIT: message to Katie, have you ever had Gout? its not a normal type of problem. what it is is cristals built up from certain foods and drinks which your body doesn't get rid of fast enough or at all, these can be any part of your body many have it in feet and legs because of gravity. it usually attacks joints but will also attack muscles too, joints are prone to attacks if they have been injured badly like my elbow. Gout will eventually go away it just takes time.. trust me i have had it 3 times this year!

If you have someone that will help you, you lay on the floor and elevate your feet up on a cushion of a sofa or chair. Have them take a towel, soak it in hot water, ring it out, the lay it wherever it is swollen. Have a second towel handy to quickly replace the first one when it cools. Use a towel like that at least 6 to 7 times. After wards, apply some Aspercreme for the pain. Rest the ankle/knee as much as possible and keep them elevated. Moist heat is the best for the swelling and Aspercreme leaves no odor. Do this procedure at least twice a day and see if it helps. The Aleve will cause swelling in both of those places. I would rather take Extra Strength Tylenol for a couple of days, or use the topical pain creams. If you walk a lot, a support may be a good idea to put on, but take off when laying. Wishing you the very best sir and of course, good luck on easing the pain. You also need to find out what is triggering that gout.
