could trojan virus have anything to do with it?

There is a sound troubleshooter in your windows "Help and Support" thing. Depending on what version of Windows you're running, it will be in a bit of a different place, but if you poke around a little bit in the help menu, you should be able to find it. It will walk you through several steps to test your sound setup.
If you are using Windows XP, this link should open the sound troubleshooter, I think:

This may be the cause of a faulty motherboard or driver issue. Try going to your motherboard's manufacturer website, and searching for the drivers for your specific motherboard.

Go to settings/control panel/system/device manager
and delete the sound device and shut down. Reboot
and you should get the message "new device found" see
if windows can install it from the windows files.
If it is not there you will have to download the driver and install it manually.
