Celery seed extract will help enormously in relieving the painfull condition of gout ...... celery seed contains morethan two dozen anti inflammatory compounds.... which is precisely the natural remedy you need.
aside from that reduce your protein food intake from red meats, dairy products, poultry, fish and seafood as they can raise your blood levels of purines..... in turn, purines elevate your uric acid levels and increase your risk of a gout attack.
actually a diet high in processed sugar, processed salt, animal protein, saturated fat, alcohol, caffeine, sodas and pop will all do the same thing ....... raise uric acid levels in the bloodstream thus prompting your body to rip the calcium and magnesium right out of your bones in an attempt to neutralise it ....... and possibly leading to arthritic and gouty type inflammatory pain and conditions.
i have found that if i eat sugar in any form whatsoever be it fruit or processed sugar i get vicious slamming bone pain in my fingers, wrists or toes........... only to "spontaneously heal" if i avoid sugar completely ....... watermelon and pears are low sugar fruits and i appear to be able to tolerate small amounts of those .. and, sadly, the biggest culprit for me is potatoes and processed sugar ..... even organic brown rice makes me hurt.
go on a food trigger hunt.....strip his diet back to green vegies like celery freshly juiced and quinoa (pronounced keen-wah) ... organic quinoa of course ........ two of the least allergenic foods i have found .... and then slowly add one new food in each day ....... and listen to his bodys response...... if it hurts don't eat it....... sure it's mind numbingly tediously boring but it's 100% slam dunk effective ...... food and chemical intolerances can produce symptoms that cover almost the whole range of "diseases" and "illnesses"...... i suggest he ditches potatoes and processed sugar ...... one at a time of course and wait for the reaction.
alcohol increases uric acid production so cut right back on it or ditch it completely.
drink loads of nonalcoholic fluids like water, freshly squeezed juices and other non alcoholic fluids which will dilute urine and promote the excretion of uric acid.
mix this one up ~
240ml of cherry juice
120ml of strawberry juice
60ml of cranberry juice
1 - 2 teaspoons turmeric (organic)
1 - 2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger
dash of cinnamon (organic)
mix the cherry juice, strawberry juie, and cranberry juice... spice up the blend with the turmeric and ginger and add the cinanamon for flavor and drink up ....... this recipe will hopefully help you avoid a painful encounter with gout again.
if you truly wish to know which foods are triggering intolerant reactions then it is imperative that you try the organic variety.
i say organic with the powders and spices as they use some nasty sludge chemicals to "preserve" the commercial varieties .... go organic on all the ingredients if you can afford it....... with the fruits it's not as vital to go organic if you are juicing them as the chemical and pesticide residue from commercial farming resides in the pulp not the juice.
good luck mate
peace baby

I had dozens of gout attacks and they are so frickin painful that I had to get drug for them, the only one I take but not on a regular basis. I wind up taking way, way less than a few pills a month by taking one or two at the start of an attack.
The attacks come fairly infrequently between them..
I refused the allopurinol and rarely take the anti-inflammatories as they caused my mom's kidneys to be destroyed and she wound up on dialysis but the pain is so great sometimes I had to..it feels like someone repeatedly hit my foot with a hammer or cut it up with razors or something.
I have found that by taking one or at most two pills if it does not leave of Colchicine that so far it goes away in a day or so. The prescription has 30 pills so it lasts a long time as one has breaks between attacks and if one or two can improve or fix it, it could last quite a while..mine have unlike the pills they want you to take daily
Interestingly, it is made from a plant the seeds of the autumn crocus or meadow saffron which was first used for gout in 1810 but I do not know how they altered it.

luckily it has been several months since I had an attacks as I started eating better I guess.
I would recommend he make a single trip to a doctor who will write several refills and have it on hand just in case of severe pain as a fellow suffer
Now As far as natural things, he might try the hallelujah diet which is mostly mostly raw vegan diet that has helped others and will help many health problems

Dr walker in his book on vegetable and fruit juices recommend the following fresh juice formulas for gout in addition to sour cherry juice and cherries of all types which is the standard advice on gout
1 carrot - 10 oz and spinach 6 oz
2 carrot 7 oz celery 4 oz parsley 2 oz and spinach 3 oz
3 carrot 10 oz beet 3 oz and cuke 3 0z
4 carrot 11 oz beet 3 oz coconut 2 oz
also helpful for gout he says (the top four (1-4) are most important) are:
5 spinach juice
6 carrot 9 oz celery 5 oz and parsley 2 oz
7 carrot 12 oz and parsley 4 oz
these are the proportions for a single glass
the more glasses you do the better
a drink them within 15 minutes or the enzymes dissipate..do not store in refrig but make fresh each time
b..going somewhere like aldis you can get very cheap produce..even if it is not organic if the pulp (fiber) is not eaten no pesticides etc will be in the juice as they are only in the plant fibers and juicing crushes the fibers and releases the unpoisoned part.
c chew the juice

we see all heart's suggestions there at the top of the list..celery seed extract..
(make this into a tincture as it will last many years as follows)
take celery seeds and add 80 proof vodka and have it half celery seeds and half vodka when it settle..shake several times a day in two weeks strain through a cheesecloth or cloth and put in a dark colored bottle ( tincture bottle with an eyedropper top would be best like this type http://images.search.yahoo.com/images/view?back=http%3A%2F%2Fimages.search.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%2Fimages%3Fp%3Dtincture%2Bbottle%26b%3D41%26ni%3D20%26ei%3DUTF-8%26pstart%3D1%26fr%3Dytff1-%26fr2%3Dtab-web&w=78&h=218&imgurl=www.hgpills.com%2Fmisc_images%2Fhodia_tincture.jpg&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hgpills.com%2Fdefault.cfm&size=5k&name=hodia+tincture+j...&p=tincture+bottle&oid=6587051cb6f5d654&fr2=tab-web&no=44&tt=332&b=41&ni=20&sigr=112m9lbgf&sigi=11elr406i&sigb=13hvne7jt ) or in a clear glass bottle in a paper bag (light deteriorates it) and label it then take 60 drops (2 dropperfuls) 3-5 times a day
