Been taking it for the last 4 years. Symptoms go away in 24 hours. The more often you take it though, the more likely you get the "runs". It's a side effect I can live with versus the pain of gout. It just started appearing in my knee a few months ago, which was a first. Before that, it was my big toe first, then my whole foot, then around the shins. Taking it with Indomethicin (anti-inflamatory for the pain - three times a day). I have had gout since the late 1990's. It's hereditary on my mom's side (unfortunately for me). When I eat too much fried foods or red meat, it seems to act up then. Just this past weekend, I took the meds prior to four different parties when I thought I felt some slight pain. Never flared up all weekend.
Hope that helps.
