Gout is an inflamation of the joints. This may be caused by several different factors such as arthritus, or high uric acid levels in the blood. One cannot do too much about arthritic causes outside of taking anti-inflamatories. High uric acid levels in the blood can be controlled with medications such as Allipurinol.

Gout (gouty arthritis) is a painful joint condition caused by the body not processing uric acid properly.
If a doctor confirms you have gout there are good medicines to control it in many cases and some folks think certain dietary controls are helpful as well.

Gout is arthritis caused by an excess of uric acid in the body. It causes needle-shaped crystals to form in your synovial fluid. As your immune system tries to get rid of the crystals, inflammation develops, causing arthritis. It can be caused by an over-production of uric acid (typically by a hereditary condition) or an inability of the kidney's to excrete the uric acid effectively (brought on by diabetes or alcohol-consumption).
While Gout can't be cured, it can be successfully treated. Lifestyle changes can be effective in minimizing its occurrence. Your doctor may ask you to change your diet, quit drinking alcohol, lose weight, quit taking drugs (such as diuretics), and avoid activities that stress your joints. You may also need to take daily serum uric acid-lowering (SUA) medication to reduce your uric acid levels.
