Fatty food and food high in sugar and starch can all aggravate gout symptoms. I had a bachelor cousin and uncle who lived together and ate Domino's pizza and drank Pepsi all the time. They both had trouble with gout at the same time, coincidence?, I think not When their diets improved so did their symptoms.

avoid acidic foods, eat alkaline foods (see: http://www.essense-of-life.com/info/foodchart.htm )
NEVER consume tap water...buy distilled or spring water and drink lots of it! There are plenty of really good books out there to help as well, look at the library on books about detoxing
also switch to organic foods...
I have arthritis in ALL joints (at 33) and following these few things I am now 95% free of pain on a daily basis and RARELY/next to never take pain killers anymore.
Good luck I know this is painful and hard to deal with.
