Inflamation is the most likely cause of swelling. Previous injury can cause this inflamation as can number of conditions, like diabetes. You could have your physician order a ct scan and an mri scan, that should help in the diaqnoses of what is causing this swelling. Btw ice helps to reduce swelling and inbuprofen helps to reduce inflamation. You can get both otc, over the counter.

Systemic Lupis Erythematosus? There are lab tests for this.

Only a possibility - It could be a stress fracture. They can be caused by doing very simple things over a period of time (could be years) that slowly weaken the area and you are left very swollen and painful, with no apparent cause. I once had one from walking my dog - she tended to pull to the left, and after 2 years my left ankle/lower leg swelled up but I had no idea why. Think about anything you might do quite often and see if you can create a link.
