But gout is cause when your body breaks down purines, which are found in proteins. If you eat a lot of meat, particularly organ meat [liver, etc.], asparagus or mushrooms, or some fish [sardines, herring] you have an increased chance of getting gout. It also associated with drinking alcohol. And it can be caused when your kidneys aren't working well and can't excrete enough of the uric acid in your blood.

It can be genetic, and males are more likely to get it than females.

The best thing to reduce the uric acid is to avoid the foods that I listed above, and alcohol.

I never heard of the GoutCleanse. If this isn't something prescribed by your doctor, just something that's sold as a "natural remedy" I'd be very suspicious that it's not something just to separate you from your money. I looked it up on line, and saw it costs $ 149 at the site I looked at http://www.totalbodysource.com/prod1326.aspx?source=Shopping.com_Total+Body+Source [that's right, $ 149, no missing decimal points]. The first active ingredient I see is Triethanolamine salicylate, which is just a fancy term for asprin suspended in alcohol. The next is Methylsulfonylmethane, which is another pain reliver, but one website warns that some herbal/supplements that contain this have harmful impurities [http://www.medicinenet.com/methylsulfonylmethane_msm-oral/article.htm ]. The last ingredient is emu oil. That seems like high priced snake oil to me.

So as I said before, your best option is to avoid the foods that can increase your blood levels of uric acid and to have your doctor check your kidney function [can be done through simple blood and urine tests].
