Are you taking medicine? Usually if you take your medicine you will start to feel better in a couple of days. If you aren't taking medicine, it will continue to hurt. Also it depends on how long you have had the symptons. My husband usually is hurting bad for a couple of days if he doesn't catch it at the very beginning. We just keep his medicine refilled in case it comes back. In some people it never comes back and some people get it once or twice a year.

Have you been to the dr.?? You should be taking allopurinal daily, forever. It is cheap, no real side effects for most people. Additionally, when you have an outbreak, which may still occasionally happen even with Allopurinal, you take Colchicine 0.6mg. Every couple of hours until suddenly the pain stops, and the swelling goes down....and you have a few hours of raging diarrhea, but it's worth it. Some dr. will prescribe the colchicine as a daily dose, I won't take it that way.
Take medicines correctly and you can eat whatever you like. One dr. told me that trying to control gout, which is caused by uric acid crystals forming in joints, is crazy. Most of the time it won't work so the meds are easier.
Don't wait if you haven't seen a doctor, or you'll be in for some REAL PAIN and swelling. I've had it 30 years now, doing fine, no major outbreak in more than 3 years. and then I was rid of it in two days. Good luck.

My b/f gets gout all the time & he takes preventive medication daily & he has to take extra meds when the onset occurs.He has changed his lifestyle & eating habits & he still gets it 2-5 times a year.Last year he was out of work almost the entire month of December with gout so I really don't know what to tell you except take your meds,eat right,& stay away from alcohol & hopefully it will run it's course in a few days.Be warned!!! gout can also spread to other parts of you body as well.I know it hurts like hell in your toe but my dad got it in his chest once and could barely take a breath.By the way do you happen to live in the south? Because I've noticed that a lot of southerners get it more than northerners.Good luck & take care.
