WoW, sorry to hear about the Gout. My Dad has it on occasion. I don't know about side effects from Meds(check with your pharmacist). I've heard that drinking Black Cherry Juice or eating black cherry's will help rid you of the gout. Don't know about the baking soda thing. That's got a lot of sodium in it. Might not be good for the gout. Watch what you eat. My Dad has flare ups when he indulges in Shrimp and pork! Also, take about 3 Advil at a time, it will help with the swelling(my sister the nurse recommends that, short term)

First of all sorry for suffering from gout...
It is a simple disease of complication if u can prevent it...
they are many medications for Gout..
Some medications for Acute attack and this contain Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or pain killer or in some cases they used colchicine..
Side effects of NSAIDs or cholchicine are many if used for long time (mainly ulcers, water retention, and toxicity with colchicine in some cases).
For prevention of attack the best medication is Allopurinol (Zyloric) this is safe if used properly...
During gout u have to keep a good intake of water...
Avoid wearing tight shoes..
minimize meat eating...
avoid cold conditions...
