Gout is caused by elevated uric acid. The problem is that elevated uric acid also causes high blood pressure, kidney disease, and more. The three primary "foods" that raise uric acid are fructose, beer and meat. Then, to a lesser degree, beans and lentils.

Dr. Richard Johnson MD is one of the nations leading authorities on fructose. Dr Mercola has a video interview of Dr Johnson that explains the fructose, uric acid, gout and more.

I know what u did
Tomatoes are the biggest culprit with lots of uric acid. He has to avoid tomatoes/ketchup.

Cinammon powder will heal him very soon. So add cinammon powder to his tea and any other food.

U can google the 2 foods and check for urself.

Stop wasting your time and energy to memorize the list of food your step dad should or shouldn't have. As a matter of fact, it is not the purine or uric acid in the the food that causes the gout attack. It is the weaken liver and kidneys that reduced the body ability to get rid of the uric acid. Instead of focusing on what NOT to eat, you should advice him to eat more greens, fruits and drink plenty of water to help flush away those unwanted uric acid.

If possible, ask him to practice some acupressure or reflexology that can 'massage' the liver and kidneys to help restore its natural ability to get rid of uric acid.

I agree with alot of what Hemen Ee says... it's not very imporant to avoid certain foods. Important things are to help the body get rid of uric acid, and to help the body not produce so much uric acid.

Things that have helped me: drink tons of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight, each day. Drink fruit juices that are 100% juice. Cherrys and pineapple are good for the body for gout. Avoid beer, coffee, high fructose corn syrup, as they dehydrate the body. A glass of red wine each day is fine. Eat veggies. Take celery seed pills. Look into getting a prescription for allopurinol, it's very inexpensive and has hardly any side effects. It helps the body to get rid of uric acid.

Good luck to you and your step dad!

Rather than memorize a long list of foods to avoid, keep in mind a few basic principles.

1) Stay away from processed meats like sausage, bologna, bacon, etc.
2) Keep a health balance between protein and carbs--too much protein is a big factor
3) Drink lots of (uncaffeinated) fluids
4) Drink cherrry juice or eat cherries every day.
