the only thing that stops the pain for me is Prednazone. there is also a med to prevent flareups, but i can't remember the name. eating nuts is what causes mine to flare up the most.

Ouch, 5 months, I had it for 3 weeks and wanted to die!!
Of course you should always keep your ankle elevated and ice it every 2 hours. This sounds crazy, but get your self some Black Cherry Juice, (real, no artifical) drink it like crazy, it counter acts the Uric Acid that is built up to cause the Gout.
It's not a wives tale, I promise you it worked wonders for me.
Do you know not to drink alcohol or eat rich, red meats?
Does the swelling "pit" when you press your finger into it?
That means stay indented. Do you remember if the ER did a test on you called a Doppler, to check your pulse in your ankle? Okay, enough questions....
There is a drug that they prescribe for Gout that is rather expensive if you don't have insurance, but I feel like its worth it. Its called Lyrica, you can ask your doctor for a prescription of it, also you can take Lasix, which is a prescribed water pill.
You must be careful with water pills though.
Bottom line is 5 months is way to long to have swelling like that, the nerves in your foot and ankle must be reacting like crazy. I wish there was more i could think of to help you, if you want to ask me any questions, you can email and I will try to help you. Sorry, I can't do any more for you! :-(

I feel for you; my mom came down with gout, and she was in quite a bit of pain. Actually, the doctors should have really checked your medical history to see what is causing this, because everyone's body is different.
I am not sure if you were told about gout ay be caused by your body having a high level of uric acid. My mother's is caused by her taking such a large dosage of diretics for a heart condition.
You should look at a purine diet, and check the list to see if there is anything that you can find that may cause a gout flair up. Not everything on the Gout Diet list will cause everyone to have the same reaction. For example, it says that gout patiencts should not eat beef, seafood, cauliflour, and etc... Maybe seafood and cauliflour is whay causes your flair up and beef causes my mother's; you need to find your cause.
And, like the doctor told my mother, her body will always have a high amount of uric acid; therefore, she can have a flair up at any time. Also, she is allergic to the gout medicine, so she has to take a small amount of prednisone.

I had gout for years. It was associated with my high triglyceride levels, which impeded my kidney function, which left excess uric acid in my blood, which lead to gout. Your situation may be different. I can tell you that in my situation avoiding alcohol and red meat helped immensely. I also had to get my trigyceride levels under control.
There are drugs doctors can prescribe if you have been diagnosed with gout. One prevents attacks, the other one I got helped with the pain during an attack. Called Indomethacin. It's not a painkiller, it's an anti inflammatory and it was great at relieving the pain. Cherry juice, Aleve ad lots of water are other things I took to help me during and attack. I hope you get some relief!
