Gout is VERY common. And no, uric acid must be present because those crystals that are built up around the joint are caused by elevated levels of uric acid. Gout hurts like hell. I am a 28 year old healthy female. Other than thyroid disorder and HBP no underlying health issues. I had gout about a month ago in my left toe. It is really painful. You will be given Prednisone (if that doesn't work, you'd start another round of steroids but it'd be a different medication) and usually some pain medication. Cheese, milk, foods high in fat, certain veggies can cause gout. It's not very common though in young people unless you have something else wrong with you. Have you had blood work done? What were the results?

Peter, If a person has a diagnosis of gout (and that diagnosis is confirmed as correct) then by definition, they must have a higher level than normal of uric acid in their blood. When the blood contains a high level of uric acid the kidneys cannot filter it out efficiently, so consequently this crystalized uric acid is deposited elsewhere in the body--most commonly in the joints of the feet (but other places as well). These deposits are called trophi and are responsible for the pain sufferers of gout experience.

I hope this helps.

It is common to get Gout and have normal uric acid levels. When uric acid levels are high, the body attempts to lower them. It does this by depositing it in the joints (which is what causes the gout) - this lowers the uric acid level, so when you get the gout and have a blood test, the uric acid can be at normal levels (it may have been high just prior to teh attack)

"Among patients not on the hypouricemic agent, 11% had a true-normal serum urate level during their acute episode of gout. "
