Can having gout cause high sugar levels in blood or vice versa.

Can having gout cause high sugar levels in blood or vice versa.I have been feeling exhausted lately and a bit sick in the mornings then I took gout in my fingers went to GP and he did a random blood sugar test. Now he wants a second fasting one as my first was high. I did have a bowl of frosties(reduced sugar) for my breakfast before I had the random one could that have caused it to be high? If so though surely most people must have high sugar levels in the morning after eating cereal.Anyway could it be diabetes?

This sounds more like pre-diabetes type II. For sure the cereal affected the random test. Exhaustion is another sign. Are you thirsty a lot? Void a lot?

Fasting is much more accurate. Gout is a elevated level of uric acid in the blood affecting the extremeties, usually the lower ones. Very easily controlled with a maintenance dose of allopurinol 300 mg. Ask your doctor.

any infections at all will raise glucose levels in anyone and having any cereal at all will for sure not help that.

Yes, do the fasting glucose to be sure you don't have a "sugar" problem. It probably isn't, but it is much better to catch it near the beginning rather than after it has done some damage to tiny peripheral nerves and blood vessels.

try a lower carb food plan than the one you are currently eating. It will help with weight, the gout problem, and any sugar problem you have. I like South Beach.

Diabetes can cause gout, but gout does not cause diabetes.

Frosted cereals of ASNY type will casue you blood sugar to be high -- Frosted Flakes, Sugar Pops, Apple Jacks, even Quaker Puffed Rice. Oddly, even straight corn flakes have a LOT of sugar in them, so plain old cornflakes will raise you blood sugar.

Your doctor needs to do a test called HbA1C (or just A1C) Most doctor can do this in their office in 5-10 minutes. But if the doctor does not have the material then he will have to take a blood sample and send it to a lab for 2-3 days.

The A1C test takes an AVERAGE of your blood sugar for about the last 90 days. A NORMAL reading is between 5 and 6. If your A1C reading is normal then you don't have to do much, but eating sugary food will aggravate the gout.

If your reading is above 7, then the doctor should order a Glucose Tolerance Test. This is a more complicate test that requires you to be in the doctor office for 3-4 hours.

The Glucose Tolernance Test will tell you if you have diabetes or not.

The doctor COULD do the Glucose Tolerance test first, but it is more difficult and expensive, while the A1C is an excellent and cheap "pre-screener" test
