Burn on hand, swelling in the hand , NO fluid..what gives?

Burn on hand, swelling in the hand , NO fluid..what gives? My father in law burned his hand on a crock pot last Friday night, and received a nasty burn (at least 2nd. degree) to the top part of his hand about an inch away from the webbing between the thumb and index finger. We had him ice the area immediately, and aside from the pain from the burn..nothing was really awry. By the time Saturday night rolled around, he was feeling sickly..almost as if he was getting the flu. He slept, off and on, until Monday afternoon. By that time, his hand had ballooned up to three times the size, and the swelling began to creep up his arm. My husband and I took him to the nearest hospital, and he was admitted. Being that my F.I.N. has had gout in the past, the doctors narrowed down their diagnosis to three possible things. 1.) Gout flare up 2.) infection 3.) edema/lymph edema. They decided to drain the fluid out of his hand/arm..and when they did this..there was NO fluid present..but still tons of swelling. The doctors are stumped. What gives?

Mr. T
sounds like he has a infection/ and gout. something triggered in his system to act up. What he needs to do is get MRI and xray on his hand and arm, to ensure that nothing is damaged. i think he needs to go see skin doctor and see what's up.
