It's best to see a doctor. The medicine works very fast once you're on it--you'll probably have relief within 24 hours.

See a doctor is the safest answer, but drink plenty of water, eat cherries or drink cherry juice. Stop drinking alcohol, (beer is the worst - could be the malt), avoid any foods high in purines, including shellfish, re meats, organ meats etc.
The inflammation is often controlled by NSAID's such as ibuprofen. (A doctor will give something stronger such as Diclofenac) . More info at http://www.richdavies.com/gout-remedies.htm
