How come opiates don't work on me?

How come opiates don't work on me?Prescribed Vicodin 18 years ago after appendectomy no effect.
Had knee surgery last year got Norco no effect.
Hospital last year with intense gout attack got morphine no effect.
Bursitis attack few weeks ago tried percoset no effect.
How is this possible?

Joe
Not sure - but count your blessings - opiates are EXTREMELY easy to get addicted to and compared to the suffering and misery to both you and your family - a little somatic pain is a small price to pay!!

NSAIDS (anti-inflammatories) actually are very good for pain control, also - did you use them? Did they work?

Mathieu
Define "no effect?" I know that sounds stupid but what exactly do you mean? Did it help your pain (even a little)? Did it cause any sedation, did you feel "loopy," did you have any euphoria, dysphoria, itching, redness, excessive sweating, constipation, nausea?

Obviously the Percocet, Vicodin, and Norco were taken orally (also Norco and Vicodin both have the exact same drugs, hydrocodone and acetaminophen), was the morphine an IV?

It is really hard to say a lot since there is not a lot of information to go on. How much Percocet did you take? The strongest tablets have 10 mg of oxycodone and 325 of acetaminophen.

If you truly felt nothing- no cognitive effects, no psychotropic effects, and no analgesia at all that is odd.

However you could have a naturally high tolerance to opioids, much like some people have to alcohol. And to some extent you likely have not gotten to a large dose and I assume you did not take the opioids for very long?

If you ever do find your self in a situation where opioids are required (post op, physical trauma, chronic medical problems) tell the doctor about your prior response to hydrocodone, morphine, and oxycodone. You may do better on a synthetic opioid like Demerol (meperidine), Levo-Dromoran (levorphanol), fentanyl, methadone, even tramadol or propoxyphene.

It is really important that if you are in a situation and you need opioids (like the times before) and it is not working tell the doctor, suffering in pain only makes things worse.

@ Joe opioids certainly can lead to addiction and absolute misery but they do save lives, without opioids surgery would not be what it is today, and without opioids millions would suffer with horrific pain. Like any drug, opioids, when used properly are good and help many people.

They really don't do a lot for me either. I mostly have anxiety. If I take 8 hydrocodone which are prescribed to me, I feel sort of euphoric for 4 hours, and then I feel depressed. I tried oxicotin when I was younger, it just made me itch and feel nauseous. I didn't feel high, and I didn't notice all of my pain going away.
