In some cases of gout, surgery is required to remove the uric acid crystals and repair the joint. A podiatrist or foot specialist doctor can determine the procedure that would be most beneficial in your case. You can get more information over here http://www.medfoot.com/art_gout.html

Gout is a complicated thing. Short answer is no, that's not normal, if the bump and weird sensations are a result as far as you can tell of the gout.
Educate yourself on what gout is, what causes it, and what helps you to keep it away. This will help you make the decision about whether you need to go back to the dr.
I'll keep things very brief here, you can e-mail me if you want for more info.
Gout is caused by uric acid crystals that form in a joint. If your body has too much uric acid or doesn't get rid of enough of it, then the uric acid crystals form. You don't want this of course, you remember the pain. Ow-wich!
To help the body get rid of uric acid, drink lots of water, 1 oz for every 2 lbs of body weight. Avoid things that dehydrate the body, like beer, liquor and coffee.
To help reduce the uric acid in your system, you can get a script for allopurinol, it's cheap and has no side effects. You can take celery seed pills to help the liver not create so much uric acid. You can drink 100% fruit juices and avoid high fructose corn syrup.
So much of what restaurants offer (and what we see on commercials) is not good for the body. Salt, fat, HFCS, processed foods. For us gout sufferers, we need to eat more fruits, veggies, sour cream, cottage cheese, and plain yogurt in a smoothie made with orange juice and fruit.
Good luck to you!
